Orhan Tatar, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Agency's general director (AFAD), said that at least 5,775 buildings collapsed after an earthquake hit Turkey.

Turkey's President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has said that nearly 912 people were killed and 5,383 were injured, adding that the authorities couldn't anticipate how high the death toll might advance, and rescue operation is still underway. Early Monday, a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southeast Turkey and Syria.

More than 1,300 people were killed and thousands injured on Monday when two earthquakes struck central Turkey and northwest Syria.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 miles with an aftershock measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale, the USGS said.

This incident comes more than 20 days after strong tremors were felt in the national capital region. On January 5, an earthquake of 5.8 magnitude had hit the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.
