Earthquake

This is the second earthquake in the northeast region to be reported on Tuesday. An earthquake of magnitude 3.2 struck the Noney district of Manipur earlier today, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

Earlier this month, India sent relief materials as well as medical and rescue teams to Turkey after a powerful quake struck it. As part of quake assistance, India also sent relief materials and medicines to Syria which was also hit by the quake.

The Army Chief said this after interacting with members of the Indian Army's medical team that has returned to the country after rendering extensive services to a large number of earthquake-hit people in Turkey's Iskenderun region.

The disaster agency said another 6.4 magnitude tremor struck Turkey's southern Hatay province late Monday evening. Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said three people were killed and 213 were taken to hospital after quakes, urging people to stay away from damaged buildings. At least six people were injured in Syria, as per reports.

A total of three NDRF teams were sent to quake-affected Turkiye on February 7 following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's directive to offer all possible assistance to that country.

In a tweet, the National Center for Seismology said, "Earthquake of Magnitude:3.9, Occurred on 16-02-2023, 09:26:29 IST, Lat: 25.30 & Long: 91.71, Depth: 46 Km ,Location: East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, India."

A short time later a magnitude 4.0 earthquake hit 45 km southwest of Taumarunui and at a depth of 78 km. This comes days after a devastating earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck Turkey and neighboring Syria.

On Sunday, the seventh consignment of 'Operation Dost' flight reached earthquake-hit Syria with over 23 tons of relief material which was received by Deputy Minister of Local Administration and Environment Moutaz Douaji at Damascus airport.

In a tweet, the NSC said that the earthquake occurred around 4:15 am at a depth of 10 kilometres from 70 km northwest of Yuksom, a town that is around 116 km from the state capital Gangtok.

Noting that India has already made preparations to provide emergency disaster relief operations and medical aid to the affected areas of Turkey and Syria, CM Pinarayi Vijayan said Kerala is also ready to provide all possible assistance in this regard.
