The quake occurred around 13:06 pm local time (0606 GMT). The quake was revised down from an initial magnitude of 7.2 reported by the USGS. Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned of possible aftershocks.

Rescue efforts have been hindered by several factors, including damaged roads and bridges, power outages, and a shortage of heavy equipment to help move concrete rubble. Meanwhile, Tuesday witnessed an improvement in the availability of power and phone services.

Earlier, Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency had said the quake had a magnitude of 5.6 and struck near Cianjur, about 100 kilometres (60 miles) from Jakarta.

Earlier on Saturday, strong tremors were felt in parts of north India, including in Delhi-NCR as a 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, nearly 101 km east-southeast from Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand, officials said.

The epicentre was about 29 miles (46 kilometres) south-southwest of Aguililla, Michoacan, at a depth of about 15 miles (24.1 kilometres). Michoacan's state government said the quake was felt throughout the state, but did not immediately report damage.

Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau said that most of the damage appeared to be north of the epicentre and was in the town of Chishang at the relatively shallow depth of 7 km (4 miles).

A viral video showing the earthquake's impact has emerged on social media. A parked train sways like a toy model at a railway station in Taiwan. Several people are also seen taking shelter near benches in fear.

Several pictures and videos of damage to a university in the eastern highland town of Goroka showed large cracks appearing in walls and window awnings falling during the quake.

The death toll from a 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck southwestern China rose to 66 as rescuers searched for victims and survivors, local authorities said on Tuesday.

The quake comes in the aftermath of a heat wave and drought that caused surging power demand and reduced hydropower generation in the region, leading to widespread power cuts to factories last month. Power was only restored last week when rainfall brought cooler temperatures to the region.
