Many brave Indian women had laid their lives fighting the British invaders. The great Rani of Jhansi Lakshmi Bai is well known. But not so the two brave women of Tamil Nadu.

Some prominent industrialists worked closely with the national movement and also Mahatma Gandhi. Among them were Ghanashyam Das Birla and Jamnalal Bajaj. Besides participation in and funding for the movement, they provided strength to nationalism by setting up modern industries and also giving livelihood to a large number of Indians.

Born into a nationalist family, Bhagat Singh was attracted to the freedom movement even as a boy. Singh was brought into the political movement while studying at Lahore's National College set up by nationalist leader Lala Lajpat Rai.  

A person from Kerala was fondly called Rosapoo Durai by the people of Madurai in Tamil Nadu. He was Barrister George Joseph. Acclaimed freedom fighter. Famed Barrister. Eminent Editor. Gandhi's dear comrade.

When Bhagat Singh was sentenced to death in the Lahore conspiracy case, Batukeshwar Dutt was sent to life imprisonment at Andaman's Cellular jail. After his release from jail, Dutt contracted tuberculosis. Yet he participated in the Quit India agitation and courted imprisonment for four more years. He was interred at the Champaran prison in Bihar. Dutt did not receive due recognition in independent India and died in poverty in 1965.

For many decades, many heroic Polygars across the region offered stiff resistance and also even brought the British East India Company to its knees. But the superior might of the Company finally triumphed, and many Polygar heroes ended up martyrs.

Who could be the first Indian queen who fought against colonial invaders? It could be Queen Abbakka Chautha of Ullal, near Mangalore in today’s Dakshin Kannada district of Karnataka state, who opposed the Portuguese as early as the 16th century.  

The national flag not only strengthens the spirit of devotion towards the nation among people but also unites every citizen. But before you decide to unfurl the tricolour at your home, you need to keep in mind some rules and regulations the same. Violating these norms may see you getting penalised.
