The 17-nation biennial Exercise 'Pitch Black', which is being hosted by the Australian Air Force in the Northern Territory, will commence from August 19. The exercise is being conducted for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic. The last edition of the exercise was held in 2018.

The 13th edition of the joint special forces exercise, which commenced on August 8, is aimed at improving interoperability between the two forces. The previous edition was conducted at Joint Base Lewis Mcchord, Washington (US) in October last year.

The exercise is being held when tensions between China and the United States still prevail over Taiwan and the ongoing India-China border standoff. The exercise, which will conclude on September 5, will be conducted on 13 training grounds in Russia's Eastern Military District.

74B7 Army Dog Axel was deployed in Operation Rakshak (Jammu and Kashmir) since December 2021 and participated in numerous counter-terrorism Operations. Axel was killed in action during Operation Wanigam Bala in Baramulla district on July 30.

On August 14, 2012, Captain A Rahul Ramesh displayed an exceptional sense of responsibility and camaraderie as a true leader, unmindful of his personal safety and upholding the highest traditions of the Indian Army. He willingly laid down his life to save the life of others. 

For displaying inspiring leadership, indomitable courage, initiative and exceptional devotion to duty in the highest traditions of the Indian Army, Lt Col Sher Jung Thapa was awarded Mahavir Chakra. After retirement, he was settled in Mcleodganj. He died at Army Hospital, New Delhi, due to old age in 1999.
