More than 120 eminent citizens, including retired high court judges and former bureaucrats, have written to President Droupadi Murmu opposing what they called "highly objectionable attempts" to legalise same-sex marriages.

On Friday, President Murmu inaugurated the 'Gaj Utsav 2023' at the Kaziranga National Park to mark 30 years of Project Elephant. During the programme, she said, "The responsibility of man-elephant conflicts rests on the human society."

As soon as he entered, the BJP members chanted "Jai Shri Ram" and some other slogans. The speaker said in his speech that the House began on January 31 and President Droupadi Murmu delivered her address to the joint sitting on that day.

Lauding examples of women empowerment in the country, the article said, " In the 21st century, when we have made unimaginable progress in every field, till date no woman has become the head of state or government in many countries."

The former Congress chief was scheduled to visit Prayagraj for a function at the Kamla Nehru Memorial Hospital on Tuesday. On Monday, President Murmu visited Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple after offering prayers at the Kotwal Baba Kaal Bhairav temple in Varanasi.

During his address in Rajya Sabha on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi quipped at the Gandhis, asking why they didn’t use Nehru as their last name despite being the descendants of India’s first prime minister, Jawahar Lal Nehru.

PM Modi took a swipe at protesting opposition members, saying their acts help BJP flourish further. He went on to say, “ I want to tell these MPs (Opposition MPs), the more you throw 'keechad', the better the lotus will bloom."

Addressing the Upper House, PM Modi said, "They (Congress) had the responsibility to provide solutions when citizens were facing problems but their priority and intention were different. We are working to find permanent solutions to the challenges citizens face."

Addressing the Parliament, PM Modi said, "In her visionary address, the President guided us and crores of Indians. Her presence as the Head of the Republic is historic as well as inspiring for the daughters and sisters of the country."

"The President does not run for office, but it appears that the BJP government is running its next election campaign through her. The entire speech was an election speech, praising the government for everything it has done while skipping over the things it hasn't done so well," said Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.
