The President of India is the country's highest-paid employee. Previously, the President got paid Rs 150,000 per month. The monthly payment was doubled to Rs 500,000. Other benefits are not included in the compensation.

Murmu rose from a Santhal hamlet in Odisha's rural Mayurbhanj district to become India's first woman tribal governor, climbing from a class 3 state government employee to a school teacher to a politician.

Folk artists and tribal dancers hit the streets to celebrate even before the results were declared. They had been waiting with bated breath to see the "daughter of the soil" being elected as the first tribal woman president of the country.

India is about to find out who will follow incumbent Ram Nath Kovind as the country's 15th President, as the presidential election ballots are being counted at Parliament House and the announcement is due soon.

The polls began at 10 am, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first to vote. The voting would end at 5 pm.

A total of 4033 Members of the Legislative Assembly and 776 Members of Parliament are voting in the Presidential Election faceoff between National Democratic Alliance candidate Droupadi Murmu and the Opposition-backed Yashwant Sinha to be the 15th President of India.

The presidential election is held in accordance with the system of proportional representation in which every elector can mark as many preferences for candidates as are contesting the election. According to officials, the EVMs have not been designed to compute votes based on preference; it requires an altogether different technology.

The counting of votes will be held on July 21, and the new President will take the oath of office on July 25.

In Uttar Pradesh, each MLA's vote value is 208, followed by 176 in Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu. In Sikkim, the value of a vote per MLA is seven.
