A Bell 212 helicopter carrying Iran's president and foreign minister crashed on Sunday, according to Iranian state media, as it flew through mountains in heavy fog.

The chopper crashed in Jolfa in the mountainous northwestern region of the country on Sunday. The incident happened as Raisi and others were travelling back from their visit to Iran's border with Azerbaijan.

Pir Hossein Kolivand, head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, informed state media that rescuers spotted the helicopter from a distance of about 2 kilometers (1.25 miles) as the sun rose on Monday.
