The French Air and Space Force showcased its ability to carry out long-distance air power projection by deploying a contingent from metropolitan France to the French territory of New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean in less than 72 hours, covering a distance of 16,600 km.

According to reports, the plan to phase out the remaining four MiG-21 squadrons is part of the IAF's modernisation drive and it not related to the accident of a MiG-21 in Rajasthan's Barmer last night.

"A twin-seater MiG-21 trainer aircraft of the IAF was airborne for a training sortie from Utarlai air base in Rajasthan this evening. Around 9:10 pm, the aircraft met with an accident near Barmer. Both pilots sustained fatal injuries," the IAF said.

The day also commemorates the bravery displayed by Indian soldiers during the 60-day-long 'Operation Vijay' in 1999. It came to an end on July 26, 1999, when Indian army ejected Pakistan Army troops from their seized positions, and every year on this day, Indians pay honour and reverence to all the dead heroes.
