Prime Minister Narendra Modi was accompanied by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. The Prime Minister also met with those involved in the rescue and relief efforts after the mishap in Morbi. He then visited patients at the nearby hospital.

The dham, a memorial for around 1,500 tribals who were massacred by the British army in 1913, is located in the district on the Gujarat-Rajasthan border, a region with a large tribal population.

On Monday evening, a suspension bridge collapsed in the Morbi district of the state, leading to the death of 133 people. The tragedy shook the nation, with condolences pouring in from all corners.

On Sunday, tickets were sold for Rs 12 to Rs 17, allegedly to nearly 500 people, which resulted in overcrowding on the "hanging bridge". This reportedly caused the old metal cables to give way.

Amedabad resident Vijay Goswami and his family members visited the suspension bridge on the Machchhu river in Gujarat’s Morbi on Sunday afternoon. Recounting his horror, Goswami said when some youths started shaking the bridge intentionally, it became difficult for people to walk.

"I'm in Ekta Nagar, but my thoughts are with the Morbi victims. I have never experienced such pain in my life. On the one hand, there is a heart that is in pain. And on the other hand, the path to duty," said PM Modi.

Notably, the century-old bridge underwent renovation and repair work before opening. A private company named Oreva was in charge of renovating the bridge after getting a government tender.An official noted that the bridge was reopened for the public after seven months of repair work but had not received the municipality's 'fitness certificate' for the same.

The bridge in Gujarat's Morbi city, which was nearly a century old and had only recently reopened after renovation, collapsed as it could not bear the weight of the people standing on it.

If the Gujarat election is to be held now, BJP is projected to return to power in the 182-member assembly with 133 to 143 seats, while the Congress and AAP could secure around 28 to 37 and 5 to 14 seats, respectively.
