The High Court is the state's highest court of justice. The high court operates at the state level. The constitution requires a high court in each state, although parliament may establish a joint high court for two or more states. The North-Eastern Area Act of 1971 established a joint High Court for the five North-Eastern States and two Union territories. Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura are the five states.
