On February 1, Myanmar's powerful military, Tatmadaw, detained State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint and other senior leaders before declaring a year-long state of emergency in the country.

The Tatmadaw's commander-in-chief 64-year-old General Min Aung Hlaing, who over the decades steadily rose to rank & wielded significant political significance, assumed all state power for this period.
