Godhra Train Burning

Interacting with renowned podcaster Lex Fridman, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spoke about the Godhra incident, where people were burned alive, calling it "a tragedy of unimaginable magnitude".

PM Narendra Modi will watch The Sabarmati Report today at 4 PM at Balyogi Auditorium. The film explores the 2002 Godhra train burning incident and its aftermath.

Former Gujarat minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Maya Kodnani and Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi are among the 86 accused who are on trial in the case. Of the 86 accused, as many as 18 died in the intervening period.

On February 27, 2002, as many as 59 people were killed when the S-6 coach of the train was burnt at Gujarat's Godhra, triggering riots in the state. The state government has come in appeal against the commutation of death penalty into life term for 11 convicts.

Appearing for the Gujarat government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said it was "the most heinous offence" in which as many as 59 people, including women and children were burnt alive and there was a need to hear the appeals of the convicts at the earliest.
