Self-styled godman Asaram Bapu has been granted an extension of interim bail by the Rajasthan High Court. The court allowed the extension citing health reasons, as Asaram continues to undergo treatment.

The Gujarat High Court on Friday allowed three months temporary bail to Asaram Bapu who was convicted in a 2013 rape case by a sessions court in 2023 and is serving a life sentence.

The Supreme Court granted interim protection to Discovery Communications India officials facing threats over the documentary Cult of Fear: Asaram Bapu. The court directed police in seven states to ensure their safety after threats and protests erupted following the documentary's release on Discovery+.

Asaram Bapu, serving a life sentence for rape, was granted a 7-day parole by the Rajasthan High Court for Ayurvedic treatment, after 11 years in prison. He travelled from Jodhpur to Mumbai under a police escort, showing visible frustration. He faces 24-hour surveillance and must cover treatment costs.

Asaram Bapu was accused by a Surat-based woman of repeatedly raping her while she was at his ashram in Ahmedabad's Motera around 10 years ago. The Gandhinagar sessions court will pronounce the punishment in the case on Tuesday.

The Rajasthan High Court granted interim bail to Asaram Bapu until March 31, following a similar ruling by the Supreme Court for medical treatment. Asaram is serving a life sentence for the 2013 rape of a minor, raising concerns among the victim’s family.

The court had acquitted six other accused, including Asaram's wife Laxmiben, their daughter, and four disciples who were accused of aiding and abetting the crime, for want of evidence, the prosecution said.
