  • The Karnataka Cabinet has given its approval to make amendment to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960
  • After amendment Kambala will be brought under traditional sports
  • This will allow the people to conduct the buffalo race, which is currently banned due to HC stay

 

Kambala or the buffalo race is a traditional game conducted in the coastal districts of Karnataka, mainly in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada. If the amendment is accepted by the President and the governor, a new law will come into effect, which will put Kambala under traditional sports. Thus giving the Kambala supporters to conduct the buffalo race.

 

Speaking to the media, Law Minister TB Jayachandra said that amendment to the Act would bring Kambala under traditional sports.  Currently, there is a stay by the Karnataka High Court against conducting Kambala.

 

 

The Karnataka government is set to place the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Bill before the state legislature in the current session, which will begin on February 6. This session will be held for a week.

If the bill is approved by the legislature, it will be sent to the President for his assent. Recent protests in Tamil Nadu to lift the ban on Jallikattu, which was followed by the state successfully passing an ordinance allowing the sport has given momentum to Kambala supporters.

 

Meanwhile, in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts protests against the ban on Kambala have intensified, and the government is under pressure to take immediate steps to allow people to conduct the buffalo race.
