Amma effect: Soon 65,000 women in TN's local administration

The bill to give 50% reservation to women in local administration was passed in February in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. Now, the act is being implemented through special notifications.

Polls will be held to the Tamil Nadu local administration in a month or two. The total membership of the administration is 1,32,000. So, according to 50% reservation, 65,000 women will join the administration as members.

Though this act has won the hearts of many, a large number of people also have criticised it. They say that even 33% reservation was not utilised and in most cases husbands of elected members were actually the ones taking decisions. So, the reservation does not empower women, they said.
