Supreme Court has granted anticipatory bail to veteran Telugu actor and former MP Manchu Mohan Babu in the case for assaulting a TV journalist.

The Supreme Court has granted anticipatory bail to veteran Telugu actor and former MP Manchu Mohan Babu in connection with the alleged assault of a TV journalist. The decision, pronounced on Thursday, comes nearly two months after reports surfaced of tensions within his family and his subsequent hospitalization.

Assault allegation and legal battle

The case stems from an incident on December 10, 2024, when Mohan Babu allegedly struck a journalist with a microphone at his residence in Jalpally, Hyderabad. The attack reportedly left the journalist with serious injuries, requiring five days of hospitalization and reconstructive jaw surgery.

Following the assault, a case was registered against the 72-year-old actor. While his plea for anticipatory bail was rejected by the Telangana High Court on December 23, he approached the Supreme Court for relief. On January 9, 2025, a bench comprising Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Prashant Kumar Mishra provided interim protection, preventing the police from taking coercive action against him. The final decision to grant anticipatory bail was made on February 13, 2025.

Family feud and public drama

The controversy is linked to an ongoing family dispute. Mohan Babu had earlier lodged a complaint against his younger son, Manoj, accusing him and his wife of attempting to take control of his Jalpally residence through intimidation. Manoj dismissed these allegations, claiming that his concern was about dignity, not property.

During media coverage of this family turmoil, the alleged assault on the journalist took place, further escalating the situation.

Apology and ongoing scrutiny

As the case gained traction, Mohan Babu publicly expressed regret over the incident. Despite the Supreme Court's relief, the legal battle is expected to continue, with the journalist pressing charges.

The Manchu family's internal strife has been widely covered in the media, highlighting the personal and legal challenges faced by the actor. With court proceedings still underway, the dispute remains in the public eye.
