6 steps taken by Modi govt to rein in soaring onion prices

Onion prices continue to soar across the country with rates crossing the Rs 100 a kilo mark in many states.

With retailers complaining of lack of adequate stock and the comman man hoping for rate relief in the festive season, the Narendra Modi government has been forced to take emergency measures.

Here's the steps that the government has adopted to tide over the crisis:

Step 1: Ban on onion export to ensure availability to domestic consumers

Step 2: Caliberated release of built-up buffer stock from Rabi onion
 

Step 3: Relaxing import norms for import of onions

Step 4: High Commissions reaching out to nations to contact traders for pushing for greater onion imports

Step 5: Imported onions directed to state governments at an average landed cost of Rs 58/kg 

Step 6: Centre is also bearing the transportation cost of the imported onions.
