IPL 2020: Centurious Dhawan to unwanted Deshpande, a look at the records wrecked as KXIP outlast DC

Table-toppers Delhi Capitals (DC) suffered their third loss of the season, despite a centurion innings from Shikhar Dhawan. In Match 38 of the 2020 Indian Premier League (IPL), Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) secured a five-wicket win in Dubai. While DC continue to stay at the top, KXIP rise to the fifth spot. Dhawan among selected few to score consecutive half-centuries: Prior to scoring his century, Dhawan scored his half-century in just 28 balls, which was his fastest for the season. Incidentally, he became the sixth batsman to score back-to-back 50s in the tournament. The list for the most consecutive ones is led by Virender Sehwag, who scored five in 2012.

Dhawan joins the 5,000-club: In the process, Dhawan has also become the fifth batsman to score 5,000 runs in the competition, to date. He has joined some selected greats, like leader Virat Kohli, along with Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma and David Warner.

Dhawan scripts one for scoring consecutive 90s: Just prior to his century, Dhawan also became the third batsman to score consecutive 90-plus scores in the IPL. The other two happen to be Shane Watson and Jos Buttler.

Dhawan among the elite with consecutive centuries: Dhawan has become the first batsman in the tournament to score successive centuries, besides being the ninth to do so in T20s. In the process, he has also become the fifth batsman to score multiple centuries in a season. The record for most centuries in an edition lies with Kohli, who had scored four in 2016.

DC script an unwanted one: Despite Dhawan's prolific innings, DC scripted an unwanted one. They have scored the lowest total (164/5) in the competition's history that includes a centurion knock.

Dhawan's knock produces a special stat: In an interesting observation, Dhawan's knock of an unbeaten 106 produced the third-highest ratio between two top scores in an IPL innings. Dhawan, along with Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant (14), had a ratio of 7.57. The highest happens to be between KL Rahul (95*) and Marcus Stoinis (11) of 8.64.

Axar Patel scalps a specific one: Rahul fell prey to Axar for 15 in the powerplay itself. Consequently, Axar became the second bowler to get rid of Rahul during the phase this season, after Mohit Sharma of Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Tushar Deshpande produces a hated one: The fifth over of the KXIP innings saw medium-pacer Tushar Deshpande being hit for 26 runs. As a result, he has produced the most expensive over during the PP this season.

Match summary: Winning the toss, DC skipper Iyer elected to bat first. While Dhawan did play a knock of an unbeaten 106, the other batsmen could not go beyond 14, as DC posted a modest total of 164/5. In reply, despite KXIP being off to a shaky start, it was Nicholas Pooran (53) and Glenn Maxwell (32), who ensured that there were no further troubles for the side. Rightfully, they chased it down and won the tie by five wickets.
