India vs England 2020-21, 1st Test: A look at the records scripted on Day 4

Host India put up a spirited performance against visitor England on Day 4 of the opening Test for the Anthony de Mello Trophy at the MA Chidambaram (Chepauk) Stadium in Chennai on Monday. While India would need 381 more runs on Day 5, on Tuesday, to win the tie and script some records, Monday was no short of records, as we take a look at some.

Washington Sundar joins a select list
All-rounder, Sundar played a decent knock of 85, scoring his second Test half-century in his just second game. Notably, he became the eighth Indian to score 50-plus in the debut innings of a Test away and home.

Ravichandran Ashwin becomes a first
Ashwin finished with figures of 6/61 in the second innings, while he got a wicket of the very first delivery. As a result, he has become the first Indian spinner to do the same in a Test innings, besides being the third after Bobby Peel and Bert Vogler. He has also equalled his record of claiming the most Test five-fors at a venue, with this being his third in Chennai, along with three in Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai. Furthermore, he has claimed the second-most wickets after 75 Tests, with the record being held by Muttiah Muralitharan (420). Also, Ben Stokes has become his third most victim in the format, being dismissed on eight occasions, while the former's number one victim happens to be David Warner (10), following by Alastair Cook (9).

Ishant Sharma joins an elite club
Indian pacer, Ishant finished with figures of 1/24. Nonetheless, the wicket allowed him to scalp his 300th wicket of the format, thus becoming the sixth Indian to enter the club, after Anil Kumble, Kapil Dev, Harbhajan Singh, Ashwin and Zaheer Khan. However, he is also the slowest to the same, after 98 Tests, going past the previous record of 94, by Daniel Vettori.

Joe Root joins a particular list
Root managed to score 40 in the second innings. As he is playing his 100th Test, following the same, he has managed to score 8,507 runs, which is the sixth-most after the same number of Tests. The record for the most runs after 100 Tests lies with Brian Lara (8,916).

India produces a unique unwanted one
The Indian batsmen were dismissed through a catch in the opening innings. As a result, it was the third instance of all the ten falling similarly, in an innings, after Hyderabad 1998 (vs New Zealand) and Mumbai 2001 (vs Australia).

England generates a special one
England earned a lead of more than 450 runs in the first innings. Meanwhile, it was the fourth instance of a visiting team earning a lead of more than 200 in the same innings, besides being only the second team, after Windies.

Match summary
Winning the toss, England elected to bat first and posted a mammoth total of 578, courtesy Joe Root's brilliant 218. Meanwhile, India could only manage 337 in the first innings, with Pant being the top-scorer, of 91, while Dominic Bess claimed four-for, as England earned a lead of 241. The visitor extended the lead to 419 in the second innings, while Ashwin scalped six, as the host is holding the fort.
