Championships in WWE are more than just titles; they represent a superstar’s legacy. While some wrestlers gracefully pass the torch to the next generation, others refuse to let go. Whether it was backstage politics, ego, or creative disagreements, some of WWE’s biggest names have flat-out refused to drop their titles when asked. Here’s a look at five wrestlers who put themselves before the business.
Hulk Hogan
Hulk Hogan was the face of the WWF for a long time from the 80’s to 90’s. In 1993, the management wanted Bret Hart to become the face of the company. The young star became a sensation among fans and the WWF decided that Bret Hart would become the new champion after beating Hulk Hogan in the 1993 SummerSlam. However, the torch passing never took place because Hulk Hogan refused to drop the title.
John Cena
In 2010, WWE planned for John Cena to drop his WWE championship after a cash-in from Jack Swagger. However, Cena outright refused to greenlight the plans. Instead, Jack Swagger was directed to cash in on World Heavyweight Champion Chris Jericho. Rumors suggest that Swagger was not ready for a title run yet.

Stone Cold Steve Austin

Steve Austin refused to render his title to Triple H in a triple-threat match with Mankind. WWE to keep Austin happy let Mankind win. And 24 hours later on RAW, Triple H defeated Mankind to win his first title.
Shawn Michaels
Shawn Michaels had a reputation for not handing his titles in the 90's. The superstar was tough to convince backstage. In one instance, Shawn Michaels refused to help Shane Douglas. The WWE was planning a new role for Douglas to grow his character by becoming the Intercontinental champion. However, Shawn Michaels came in the way of curbing the growth of his fellow wrestlers.
